Black Bears
If a bear approaches you or if you are in a picnic area, parking lot, lodging area, or other developed area, act immediately to scare it away. Scare the bear away by yelling aggressively and as loudly as possible until the bear leaves. The bear is intruding on your personal space: act angry and be persistent. If you are with other people, stand together to present a more intimidating figure, but do not surround the bear. While never a guarantee, these techniques are highly effective when done well. (Bear spray/pepper spray is not allowed in Yosemite.)
The purpose of yelling aggressively is not to harm the bear, but to scare it from the area and restore its natural fear of people by providing a negative experience. Scaring a bear away, along with storing your food properly, helps keeps bears wild and alive
Mountain Lions
North America’s lions are solitary creatures, and elude visitors. Instead, sightings in the park often occur when a mountain is on on the prowl. The park typically notes encounters when a lion is chasing, killing or eating a raccoon or coyote or similar prey within developed areas.
Mice
There are mice in these parts. While we’ve done our best to seal the house, there may be an occasional mouse that get into these homes. We check for signs of them in-between cleanings, but if you see one, please let us know so we can call a pest control company.
Bats
If a bat flies into the house, it’s best to turn on some music inside and open a door so that it can fly back out.
Turkeys
There are lots of turkeys that roam free in the neighborhood. It is illegal to shoot anything inside of PML. Leave these guys alone and they’ll leave you alone. If it starts pecking at your car, it’s usually because it’s mating season and thinks it’s fighting another turkey. Throwing some water right by them startles them enough for them to run off.
Frogs
Coqui Cabin is named after a type of frog, so we have history. The creek is a live with baby frogs hatching in the spring and they are super loud. It’s like having a real-life sound machine on. They has been frogs spotted inside when the house was somewhat abandoned, but none since it’s been occupied.
Wasps
There are several types of wasps in the woods. The most common of them is the Yellow Jacket, which love meat. One method that’s worked for us while dining al fresco is to give them a little plate of their own that is off the dining table.
